Non-Detergent Sulfobetaines

NDSB’s are sulfobetaine compounds that cannot aggregate to form
micelles, thus they are classified as non-detergent. NDSB’s have been
used to improve the efficiency of solubilization of membrane proteins, to
chromatographically purify halophilic proteins in low ionic strength buffers,
to isolate nuclear proteins, and to crystallize proteins. NDSB’s are nondenaturing
even at 1 M concentrations and are easily removed by dialysis. NDSB’s are
reported to facilitate the renaturation of chemically and thermally denatured
proteins. They do not absorb significantly in the near UV range and are zwitterionic
over a wide pH range.
